HOW ALLOCATING YOUR CREATIVE ENERGY MORE WISELY WILL BRING LASTING EFFECTS TO EVERY ASPECT OF YOUR LIFE AND YOUR WALLET

What if you realized you waste at least $2,000 every year on clothes and accessories? That you leave clothing in the closet and money on the table so-to-speak when it comes to your wardrobe.

Through my years working with women, I find they wear about 20 percent on average of their entire wardrobe. That means that 80 percent of your closet is hopelessly waiting to be worn.

Despite the myriad of options laid in front of them, 60 percent of women still struggle to find something to wear on a daily basis. Depending on your values around buying clothing, this can be an alarming statistic.

Wouldn’t 50 percent feel better? Or less

Say you only wear about 30 percent of what is in your closet. On average, a 55-year old woman spends $4,000 per year on clothes, or on average $333 per month. If she only uses 30 percent of her wardrobe, that means she’s losing $2,800 each year.

It’s a similar story for women aged 25. Although slightly less, 25-year-olds spend $3,636 on clothing annually, on average. A 70 percent loss is equal to $2,545.

THAT’S ROUGHLY $2,000 THAT YOU ARE NOT WEARING, AND IT’S STARING YOU IN THE FACE EVERY MORNING.

Like a thief in the night, it’s hiding behind your many other unused pieces of clothing. If you think about how much time is sucked from your morning deciding what to wear, if you are so busy making decisions in the morning about what to make for lunch, how to get a second cup of coffee, where to put the dirty laundry, why your husband left his shoes, (and that pile of mail he brought in yesterday) in the middle of the floor and what to wear, you are not alone.

We only have so much time and creative energy to give each morning. Wisely allocating those precious resources can be a game changer for the rest of the day. Wasting any energy on what to wear makes us even more exasperated than we were the day before.

Our clothing decisions, even the bad ones, are too often made in an state of emotion.

We are wholly consumed by thoughts about how our bodies look, what fits, what doesn’t and why. Most women are not a perfect size 6 and we do not like to be reminded of it every time we shop. Trying on clothes becomes an exercise in frustration that risks reinforcing any existing negative body image. To escape the negative feeling, we often settle for “good enough,” or “it works,” or “I don’t have time to shop for anything else right now,” so “this will have to do.”

We leave the house or the closet or the store in some degree of ill-fitting frustration.

Reminded of our frustration at the moments it harms us most – each time we pass a mirror or fidget with our clothing on our way to an event, a meeting, our workplace, that party we know, “I could have done better than this.”

I PROMISE THAT WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR – AN EASIER AND EMPOWERING WAY TO GET DRESSED – IS ACHIEVABLE.

Imagine for a second what it might feel like to dress in a way that curates the image that reflects who you are at a deeper level, one that is consistent and doable, a system that makes you feel confident and one that never leaves you with thousands of dollars of unworn clothing.

Imagine what’s possible with the leftover $2,000 that’s back on the table? Stay tuned for my next post on how investing in yourself can ease the gap between what you wear and what you don’t.

I will help you understand and know that you are worth it and that it matters to those with whom you live and serve. Worn right, your decisions can take you to another level.
